Buna Lawrie - Coloured Stone

Buna Lawrie is a respected Elder of the Mirning people from the coastal Nullarbor region of South Australia. He is widely known as a whale dreamer, songman, medicine man, storyteller, and as the founding member and chief songwriter of the Aboriginal rock band Coloured Stone.
Coloured Stone's most famous single, "Black Boy," became a major success when it was released in 1984. The song reached number one in Fiji and sold more than 120,000 copies. Its powerful message of pride and identity resonated strongly with Aboriginal communities. The memorable lyric, "Black boy, black boy, the colour of your skin is your pride and joy," was considered groundbreaking during the 1980s, encouraging self-respect and cultural pride at a time when such positive affirmations were rarely heard in mainstream music.
More than forty years after its release, "Black Boy" continues to inspire generations of Aboriginal people across Australia. The song gained renewed attention when it was featured in filmmaker Warwick Thornton's supernatural television series Firebite (2021-2022), introducing its message to new audiences.
Buna Lawrie's contributions to music, storytelling, and cultural preservation have made him an important figure in both Aboriginal culture and Australian music history.
